Meat Liquor N1 - Angel, London

Sometimes, very rarely, on a full moon or on very special occasions, I awake on a Sunday morning still rocking Saturday night’s make-up and smelling like Prosecco. On these mornings, smashed avocado on toast is just not going to cut it.  I need fried everything, I need burgers and I need hair of the dog…stat. Meat Liquor N1 watch out, here I come.

Meat Liquor N1 is like Angel’s dirty little secret. Hidden down an upper street alleyway in an old industrial warehouse, this is a far cry from the likes of nearby Ottolenghi and the two (!) gluten free bakeries down the road. As you step inside through bright red pvc strip door curtains, you could be forgiven for mistaking it for the texas chainsaw massacre scene from your worst nightmare. However, when the food of your wildest (hungover) dreams is brought in front of you the rest is all just an irrelevant distraction.

Arguably a contender for the best burger in London, the Meat Liquor family have honed their burger making skills to an art form, whether it’s Chicken or Beef that you fancy, whatever choice you make, there will be no food envy here. I ordered ALL of the side dishes (after all I did say I need deep fried EVERYTHING) onion rings, tick, cajun fries, tick…and because we needed to feel a little healthy, fried pickles (got to have those greens!). The highlight was the trademarked ‘Monkey Fingers’, battered chicken drizzled with hot pepper sauce and served with a blue cheese dip, served the same as their signature Buffalo wings but without the mess. It wasn’t just because I was in Angel that I could hear angels singing.

Needless to say that hot pepper sauce needed some serious washing down and the ‘Burgerette’s’ are only happy to oblige. The cocktail list has everything you could want and with names like ‘Bat Out of Hell’, ‘Smoke on the water’ and ‘Game Over’ (which comes with a warning and a limit of two per person) you are going to want to try them all. In keeping with the Angel theme, I sipped the Silver angel and the Fallen Angelita and could have quite happily done so all day, however this Angelita had to drag herself away…. until the next full moon.

You will find Meat Liquor N1 at 133B Upper Street, London, N1 1QP. They open from 12pm-11pm Monday to Friday and 10am – 11pm on weekends.
