Mama Lan - Brixton, London
As a North Londoner, heading south of the river feels almost like a trip abroad, in fact I don’t think it takes much longer to catch a train to Paris. However, my quest to find the best dumplings in London had me excitedly leaping on the southbound Victoria Line and making a beeline for Brixton Village Market to meet with Mama Lan.
Brixton Village is perhaps the most unique and authentic food destination in London. It is a maze of international foodie delights and a hot-bed for up and coming restaurants and cafes (it’s where foodie empires Franco Manca and Honest Burgers were born). While these two joints serve as tempting distractions, it is dumplings that I crave and Mama Lan may just serve up the best in London. The restaurant itself takes up a cosy corner space that quickly turns to crammed when more dumpling-loving Londoners arrive.
Mama Lan was born from a supper club run by Ning Ma and now has four restaurant sites around London. It is named in honour of her mother, who together with her grandfather ran a Beijing Street stall serving up dumplings and snacks. Craving the food she grew up with, Ning Ma brought us Londoners a taste of authentic Beijing street food.
We sampled ALL of the dumplings (all in the name of research and not pure gluttony, of course) AND perhaps the best spicy fried chicken wings EVER. The fried dumplings exceeded all expectations (the boiled ones were nice too, maybe just not unhealthy enough for me?) Dumplings, Chinese beer and spicy fried chicken wings …. An absolute marriage made in heaven. Food envy washes over me as fried vegetable balls and pork buns arrive at the table seated next to us. I have not seen one dish escape from the tiny kitchen that doesn’t look mouthwateringly good. The prices are very reasonable and this had me in a panic, trying to find more room to cram in more of Mama Lans delicacies.
I came in hunt for the best dumplings in London, however I found so much more. If you think you have found the best Dumplings in London, I want to hear about it! Drop me a comment!
