Maltby Street Market - Bermondsey, London
Exploring one of London’s best street food markets is a must in my idea of the perfect London weekend. Wandering from stall to stall, with something delicious in hand is my favourite way of discovering London’s boroughs. Tucked amongst the railway arches in the foodie haven of Bermondsey you will find a cluster of culinary delights that form the one and only, Maltby Street Market.
Maltby Street Market is only a 15 minute walk from Borough Market, however it seems a world away from the tourist hotspot. It is located on ‘LASSCO Ropewalk’ mainly a weekday food production and distribution hub but on weekends these notable producers open their doors to us lucky Londoners. The relatively short strip fills with stalls, hungry locals and some of the tastiest dishes in London.
On a sunny summer day this place does get busy, however you can still move through it without losing all of your mates and you know that you will not be queuing up for just any dodgy street eats. This is arguably THE foodie neighbourhood of London and here you will only find the pinnacle in what London food has to offer.
Here you can experience St John Maltby Street, a London Institution. Enjoy their famous Old Spot bacon sandwich in the comfort of their sit down space as the market bustles past. In order to get the full St John experience, wash it down with a glass of the St John Blanc Des Blancs (or a bottle you little overachiever, you). Conveniently placed at the door are the renowned St John doughnuts, much too tempting to walk past, I am yet to muster the strength to leave without one.
There are so many tempting stalls along the Maltby Street stretch. The Cheese Truck are continuously grilling and melting their toasties for the ever-present hungry queue of lovers of British cheese. Waffle On serve up possibly London’s best crispy buttermilk waffles, with sweet and savoury toppings it is perfectly acceptable to have one for lunch and one for dessert. When you need a little break from all of that eating, you can depend on Little Bird Gin to put together the perfect gin cocktail to sip in the shade while lapping up the market vibes.
You will find Maltby Street Market on Ropewalk, SE1 3PA, Saturday 9am-4pm, Sunday 11am-4pm.
Now is probably the wrong time to tell you that just around the corner lies the equally delightful and brimming with delicious, Druid Street Market… ok another time then.
